Hello! Thank you for your interest in starting therapy. I have a lot of experience supporting college and advanced degree students who are dealing with anxiety, OCD, and stress. I take a CBT (cognitive behavioral therapy), goals-focused approach. I am licensed in Massachusetts and New York and I can see students in either state--in fact, I work with a number of students who go to school in MA but live in NY when they are not on campus and vice versa. I'd be happy to set up a time to talk so you can ask any questions that you have to see if it would be a good fit for you.
Life can be stressful, chaotic and overwhelming. Transitions such as starting college, graduating college, a new job, separation or divorce, a significant loss, or becoming a new parent can add to our already complicated and stressful lives. Acknowledging that you need help and taking the step of finding a therapist is not easy. It takes both strength and courage. My goal is to help my clients on their personal journey. I believe in the power of relationships. I believe the power of the therapeutic relationship is what can ignite understanding, accepting, healing, changing and growing. My approach is a solution focused, strength-based perspective. I pull from a variety of therapeutic techniques to best address the individual needs of my clients. Specialty/areas of interest: anxiety, depression, relationship issues, bereavement, infertility and grief counseling, and general life transitions- specifically young adults exploring their adult identify and new parents adjusting to the transition of parenthood. I offer secure, confidential telehealth therapy. You participate where it is most comfortable and convenient for you. ***I also offer short term summer counseling for college students’ home for summer break. I am a licensed Clinical Psychologist in Newton MA with over 25 years of experience helping people who are experiencing issues such as stress, anxiety, OCD, and depression. I help people to learn skills that will enable them to challenge negative thinking, approach avoided situations, manage stress, and achieve their goals. I work with students in all years of college who could benefit from learning skills for managing social and academic pressures - including moving away for the first time, managing friend dynamics, and finding a job after college. I am a Research Associate Professor of Psychology at Boston University where I direct the Behavioral Medicine Program at the Center for Anxiety and Related Disorders. Having worked in academics for all of my career, I am well aware of the various types of pressures that students can experience as they strive to succeed.
I use EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) to process memories, thoughts and feelings. There are long, lost fears and often past traumas at play in all of us. Some surface, wreaking havoc with our lives. They can appear as grief, depression, anxiety or crisis. Others remain dormant and can surface at all the wrong times. You may appear successful, but despite your accomplishments, you are not happy or it seems like others are happier than you. Your personal relationships are not satisfying in the way you expect. Why is happiness still elusive? We can dislodge what is blocking your best life and guide you to a healthier self. We will guide you to new understandings, new behaviors and new ways of being that will lead you to a happier self. You can reduce the anxiety and depression. You can disarm the trauma and grief that has made the days so uncomfortable. I provide a safe, empathetic environment for change. Call to book an appointment or consultation.
Are you seeking to understand yourself better? Are you looking to make sense of your relationship dynamics? Do you wish things were better, but you don't know how to get there? You CAN feel empowered by an expanding of your understanding, gathering insight, and educating the choices you make in how you decide to live your life. I work with couples, and adults to help make sense of obstacles, understand how relationship histories effect life today, and become more comfortable with themselves. This is done in an atmosphere where you are accepted for who you are. We can discuss your goals. Many people feel uncomfortable considering therapy as an option for themselves. It can be difficult asking for help, believing that asking for help means we are inadequate in some way. In a do-it-yourself culture, reaching out to others can cause us to feel like we are less than, but trying to meet our own needs is actually a strength. My clients often report that they have gained more insight into their lives, that they feel more at home within themselves and more capable of handling life's difficulties as they inevitably arise. Couples leave my office feeling like they understand themselves and their partner more clearly, and report greater relationship satisfaction.
If you're like many of my clients, you long for emotional safety, clarity, and the freedom to live with authenticity, purpose, and connection. Perhaps you are super self-aware yet trapped in cycles of anxiety, overwhelm, or disconnection. You might hold on extra tight, or find yourself shutting down. As an Internal Family Systems (IFS) therapist, I'm here to guide you through exploring and befriending all of the parts of you, fostering healing, balance, and self-compassion at a pace that feels sustainable. My approach is authentic and eclectic, integrating somatic and breath-based practices, guided meditations, and other evidence-based interventions to support you. I have extensive training in Internal Family Systems, and continue to pursue deeper learning opportunities in this modality. I am is HAES aligned, neurodiversity, and gender/sexuality affirming. Genuine self-compassion is possible—and already within you. Therapy with me provides a space for you to slow down, listen inward, and reconnect not only with yourself but also with your relationships, purpose, and the world around you.
