I am a New York State licensed psychologist with over a decade of experience. I work with adults of diverse backgrounds and my areas of special interest include difficult life transitions, relationship conflict, racial/cultural identity, and grief and loss. I offer online video therapy sessions (telehealth) exclusively, making therapy comfortable and accessible. Whether you are struggling with negative feelings toward yourself, dissatisfaction with relationships, your academic performance or are having difficulty letting go of the past, experiencing fear about the future, or simply feeling stuck in current circumstances, therapy can bring about needed change. To achieve this, our work together may involve finding meaning and purpose, establishing or recovering a connection to your inner emotional world and/or important people around you, processing and recovering from emotional wounds, be they old or recent, or formulating a concrete plan of action and working on it together step by step. My theoretical orientation is primarily psychodynamic and I integrate other approaches (i.e. DBT, CBT, etc.) as appropriate while always working from a trauma-informed, culturally sensitive lens. I am Zur Institute certified in teletherapy. I offer a free brief phone consultation prior to scheduling an initial appointment in order to clarify whether teletherapy with me would be a good fit. I am passionate about supporting people on their journeys of self-exploration, empowerment, and healing. While this journey looks different for everyone, therapy provides us with a unique opportunity to learn more about ourselves- our identities, the people and places that have shaped us, and life experiences. I have deep respect for the courage it takes to show up for ourselves in this way and believe we can do so with curiosity and compassion. I believe in the transformative power of feeling deeply seen and valued in the therapeutic relationship and have personally experienced how it can help us cultivate better relationships with ourselves and others. Together, we may want to explore practices that have helped you survive thus far and experiment with new or different strategies. You may be looking to understand big or challenging feelings bubbling up while navigating life’s complexities. Or you may want to feel more rooted in yourself and your values and want to shift into a more embodied way of moving through the world. Whatever brought you here- I’ll support you every step of the way. We’ll work together to explore your unique needs, while honoring your strengths and innate wisdom. I don’t see myself as an “expert,” rather a skilled and caring partner, excited to support you as we navigate this work together. I strive to be anti-oppressive in my approach, paying special attention to the ways in which people are impacted by systems and -isms as well as my own positionality as a therapist. I completed my Bachelor’s in Gender & Women’s Studies and Sociology at the University of Wisconsin-Madison and my Master’s in Social Work at Columbia University. I've been providing therapy in community-based settings for the past 5 years, working predominantly with female, trans, and nonbinary survivors of the criminal legal system and family court system as well as survivors of intimate partner violence/ domestic violence. I am especially passionate about supporting student activists and organizers on campus. My practice is neurodiversity-affirming and I have training in self-psychology and AEDP, a trauma-focused somatic-based modality. I am also completing training for internal family systems. Some of the theoretical perspectives that inform my work include attachment theory, relational approaches, liberation psychology, and narrative therapy. I am also deeply influenced by my abolitionist values. Therapy sessions with me typically occur weekly, although bi-weekly is possible for established clients. I am able to meet via telehealth exclusively (my practice is 100% telehealth with no in-person sessions). I am currently accepting insurance and am also an out-of-network provider. This means that you may be eligible to receive reimbursement through your insurance coverage. My full fee is $150 per 45-minute individual therapy session. If you are interested in learning more about what therapy with me might look like, please reach out to schedule a free 15-minute consultation by emailing here: margaret.horwitz@balancedmindofny.com

Hi! I am Dr. Monica Johnson. If you’re reading this, it means you are taking your mental and emotional health seriously and researching someone who will be a good fit for your journey. This is exciting! Let me tell you more about me to help you with your decision making process. I am a Licensed Psychologist in NYC, but some people think of me as a problem solving pro, empowerment guru, and self-compassion guide! I partner with my patients to find pathways to a better life. I work best with people who are tired of being stuck and ready to make changes. I can’t change you. Only you can do that, but I’m super excited to be your side kick on the journey and help you highlight roads to success. One of the most important things to know about me is that I am NOT a smile and nod type of therapist. I get down in the trenches with you. I’m down to earth and real with you through this process which means I will call you out on your BS and help you figure out what to do with it. We will work hard and laugh a lot. For the record, there is nothing off limits or shameful in therapy. I’ve seen it all and heard it all. If you need to talk about sex, money, medical issues, or “that one time in Amsterdam,” don’t hesitate! I work with people of all backgrounds (race, gender, sexuality, religion, alternative relationships) and you should expect that I will affirm your identity while helping you to develop a fuller self concept. My job is to help you tap into strengths you already possess (we all have them even if we can’t see them yet) and create new ones! If you are struggling with depression, anxiety, feel constantly overwhelmed by your emotions, past traumas, poor relationships, low self esteem, or just deciding what the next step is in your career/life, I can help.

Welcome! Thank you so much for being here. As a Dominican-American and first-generation college graduate, I understand the challenges of breaking generational barriers and the value of feeling truly supported. I work with children, teens, and adults, supporting them as they navigate stress, anxiety, depression, and life's many transitions. Please know that you don't have to face any of this alone. Together, we'll create a nonjudgmental, caring space where you can pause, reflect, and gently explore what's on your heart and mind at your own pace. I believe healing occurs when you feel safe, seen, and accepted for who you are. In our sessions, I offer empathy, curiosity, and patience, creating a supportive space where you can explore your thoughts and feelings openly. My approach blends Person-Centered, Psychodynamic, and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy to foster insight, trust, and tools for growth. Therapy isn’t about fixing you; it's about walking alongside you, helping you reconnect with your strengths, and creating a safe space for processing and transformation. Wherever you are on your journey, I’m here to support you. If this sounds like what you’re looking for, I would be honored to connect. Please feel free to reach out with any questions!

Are you feeling like you do not have a safe space to talk to someone without feeling judged or biased? Are you feeling overwhelmed and having difficulty navigating your current intimate relationship(s), family members, friends, etc.? If so, then individual psychotherapy may be the right option for you. I take a non judgmental and open-minded approach when working with all of my clients. I use a Cognitive Behavioral (CBT), Solution Focused Therapy (SFT), and Narrative Therapy approach while incorporating family systems theory. Together, we can help overcome these obstacles and get a better understanding of your own self through self empowerment and esteem.

The students I work best with often share a desire to feel understood, supported, and empowered as they navigate college life, especially when their path doesn’t look like everyone else’s. I work with a wide range of college students including international students, first-generation college students, students from diverse cultural and racial backgrounds, as well as both traditional and nontraditional students. What they often have in common is that they’re carrying a lot, whether it's pressure to succeed, cultural or family expectations, feelings of anxiety, questions about identity and belonging, or simply the stress of trying to figure out who they are and what comes next. In our work together, we create space to explore these experiences without judgment. If you’re a student who’s juggling multiple roles, feeling out of place, or simply looking for support during a major life transition, you’re not alone and you don’t have to do it all on your own.

Clients who come to me have expressed feeling a change in their mood, such as feeling more irritable, more anxious than usual or that they just don't feel like themselves and aren't enjoying things that they once used to. I will provide you with a non-judgmental and accepting environment where you can feel comfortable talking openly about difficult emotions and topics. Since each person is a unique individual with his or her own experiences, I use a holistic approach to therapy that’s unique to who you are and what you will need to support your well-being. In therapy we will explore connections between your past and present experiences so you can gain a deeper sense of awareness about yourself, identify problems so you can get to the bottom of why you are feeling the way you area and learn coping skills so you can better manage symptoms and find relief in challenging moments. Mental health concerns that I specialize in but are not limited to include: anxiety, depression and trauma, as well as family dynamics, life transitions, career-related stress and self-esteem. We’re told all sorts of misinformed messages that downplay the importance of mental health, so it’s no surprise if you are hesitant or nervous about the idea of therapy but remember that you are entitled to get help, no matter what you are going through.

While you are uniquely special, your struggles are more common than you think. We all have challenges, and often in very universal ways. It’s all part of the human experience. Psychotherapy is a great way to help guide you through life’s trials and tribulations. It can be profoundly healing to have a safe space in which to be affirmed and productively challenged. Together we can explore issues related to ambivalence, shame, resilience, boundaries, connection, confidence, and self-development in order to help you fully show up in your life. I have worked with individuals experiencing depression, unhealthy relationship dynamics, life transitions, substance abuse, and trauma, as well as with the LGBTQ+ community. I also utilize a variety of evidence-based methods such as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Motivational Interviewing, and Person-Centered Therapy. I base my practice around the use of empathy and empowerment. My style is warm and down-to-earth, while also naming things in order to illuminate insight and draw meaning. The key will be for me to support you in your own self-determination. Wherever you are today on your life’s path, I want to help promote positive change and growth.

Many of the college students I work with feel overwhelmed trying to balance everything—school, relationships, family expectations, and figuring out what they want for their future. They might struggle with anxiety, self-doubt, burnout, or just feel stuck. Some are navigating big transitions like moving away from home, managing independence, or exploring their identity. I work best with students who are open to talking things through honestly, even if they’re not exactly sure where to start. Together, we’ll work to understand what’s getting in the way, build coping tools, and help you feel more grounded, confident, and in control of your life.
