Therapists for college students near 10003
Do you worry about the future? Would you describe yourself as having difficulty with perfectionism, relationships with family & friends, social anxiety or identity? We are a small practice with two therapists--Spencer & Carlie who love providing therapy to young adults as they navigate this exciting and nerve wracking time moving from childhood and dependence to adulthood and independence. We often work with young adults who may have had therapy in high school but did not previously find therapy helpful (often due to a lack of agency in picking their therapist, misunderstanding or invalidation of their experiences, disruptions in confidentiality or lack of concrete coping skills/goals worked on). We provide a reparative experience where clients feel genuinely supported and able to advocate and ask for what they need. We use a variety of different therapy modalities including Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Dialectal-Behavior Therapy, Motivational Interviewing, Attachment Based Therapy, EMDR, Goal-oriented Therapy and Mindfulness. Our clients often move towards a feeling of confidence, improved relationships and belief in their abilities to handle any challenges that may come their way.
I appreciate the time you are taking to choose the best person and process for your specific needs. Being a college student requires a lot of difficult choices, and I know finding a counselor can be hard as well. Here are some thoughts about how I work, but please contact me if you have other questions. My goal as a counselor is to shape our work around the needs, goals, and overall direction you want to take in your life. If you have very focused, concrete issues you want to address, we’ll use a solution-focused approach to create plans and strategies for focused change and growth. If you have more broad, complicated things to address, we talk about a deeper purpose and meaning for your life that can serve as a foundation for more significant changes. No matter what you would like to talk about in counseling, we will capitalize on your strengths as a whole person to create the change you seek.
I'm a clinical psychologist and a trained psychoanalyst. I believe that what promotes growth and mental health is the process of putting real but hard to see aspects of your experience into words. This decreases their power and brings them more to heel for you. This is different from challenging thoughts or skill building. You as the patient should have clear evidence in therapy that you're coming to understand yourself better and more fully. Old, stuck ways of thinking should slowly give way to the ability to think more effectively about what is and what can be. Your sense of 'you' should grow wider and more secure, and your ability live and act with purpose of your choosing should slowly build.
Sadness and fear live inside us all. At times, we are so used to feeling depressed and anxious that it seems as though there is no point to try and work through these struggles. But there is a part of us that wonders- maybe there is a way to find contentment in life? Maybe there is a way to make peace with pain? Maybe I do not need to feel so alone? In our therapy practice, we provide you with clinicians who are both skilled at their work as therapists and empathic and warm human beings. We value creating an accepting and safe environment whereby you feel comfortable expressing your struggles and fears. Our therapists are trained in evidence-based modalities such as CBT, ACT, and DBT and are well versed in addressing challenges such as anxiety, depression, and trauma. We know that the relationship between a therapist and client is key to successful work. This is why we do our utmost to pair you with a clinician you will feel comfortable with. College can be a challenging time, with many added responsibilities. This is why our team includes an executive functioning coach, helping students navigate the challenges and demands of college life. Our staff comes from varying backgrounds and life experiences allowing them to be accepting and open-minded to all kinds of challenges. Everyone deserves high-quality mental health care.
